monday blurbs
Over the weekend, we purged the last room of the house that needed purging. We can finally work in the office without having to step over crap in the floor to find the chair and without being unable to find things such as writing utensils, paper, etc... In fact, as I'm typing now the keys are echoing a bit every time they pop up again after being pressed. Nice....... Now it's time to decorate each room, feng shui, do repairs..... need money. We are on the right track with the money thing, but I never see Jason anymore. We did hang out late last night. But strangely somehow, I'm getting used to the arrangement. He's toying with the idea of quitting his day job to focus on the new business and the band, but the money dilemma would be more apparent than ever, at least for awhile......

Fray Day at IR Gallery on Saturday was fantastic. We kept our set short and sweet as too give more time to the storytellers. The stories were emotional, funny, interesting, and personal. I really enjoyed the intimacy of the whole thing because it was the exact atmosphere that I fantasize about sometimes at parties. Not like those cheesy games that people play at gatherings like showers, etc., I hate those. But I think it would be great if you could go to a keg party and everyone there becomes an interested audience for anyone who wants to share a story or a song or a poem, or a joke, or whatever. Full on campfire style. Anyone could interact with the speaker and the party would basically become a large forum for communicating and sharing, instead of everyone standing around in little clicks having a million meaningless conversations. Just a thought.

I'll be taking Asher to observe a violin lesson today to see if it's something he might want to do. I just don't know if he's focused enough yet. He couldn't even sit through the story time at the Library on Friday. He decided to run all around instead. 3 might be too young for music lessons, I don't want to make him do something he isn't ready for; it would make him lose interest. But it might be the perfect age developmentally if he's into it. He talks about it all the time, we'll see....

p.s. Freecycle.com rocks!

Unless you put him in Suzuki, (which sucks)
I personally think 3 is too young for violin.
5 is a little better,
but it's still hard to focus on such a difficult instrument so early.
The Japanese will disagree,
but then again, those kids have careers that are over by 21.
If you start him on piano, he can learn the basics
like Every Good Boy Does Fine/Great Big Dogs Fight Animals...etc...
it's less frustrating because he can learn the notes and the sound of them correctly, without having to work for the proper tone.
That way, when he starts violin, he already has an ear for the way it should feel.

I hope you don't want that chair, because I didn't hear from you and I kind of already gave it to someone on Freecycle.

He was all over it this morning. There were two other families observing and the instructor told only us that she felt he was "ready". It is the Suzuki method and they also offer piano. hmmmmm, I guess we have some decisions to make.

I suppose there isn't anything wrong with the Suzuki Method for some.
I just found it to be really boring.
We sat in circles with other kids and named notes for Hello Kitty stickers more than we actually got to play.
Then again, I was in it for piano and up until then, my dad and his friends had taught me.
I don't feel like I actually got anything out of it.
I wasn't in it for long before I went back to regular household crazy recluse people private lessons.
But for violin, there are certain techniques that need to be programmed in early, and I suppose it would be good for that.
Just watch to see what kind of class it is
and what exactly they are teaching,
because one of the girls,
the five year old,
I was a nanny for last year
started Violin Suzuki and it seemed like it was really expensive
and she never actually learned anything
and they tried to tell her mom
that SHE needed lessons too.
Soon enough they were in real deep with all the expenses
and Emily still had yet to sctually play a note correctly.
It makes me a little leary or Mr. Suzuki and his intensions.
I just remember the lessons felt cold, like a machine, not about the way music feels....not about the passion, you know?
But maybe it's different now.
After all,
It's been what....20 years since I had a Suzuki class......

I appreciate the perspective. All I'm finding online is positive opinions of the method, so I'm glad I have you to give us a more objective view. I'll keep you posted on what we decide.
